GET CREATIVE COMPETITION

On Wednesday 1 July, the #MandelaDay ‘Get Creative’ competition was launched by the Apartheid Museum, in collaboration with the Nelson Mandela Capture Site.

The aim of the competition is to provide a platform for learners to express how they feel about Madiba in a medium that best fits their personality - either poetry, prose, dance or an original short story. The two institutions are calling on all applicants to spend 60 seconds on their performance - one second for nearly every year of Mandela’s 67 years of service to his country. The competition is open to all ages - from Grade 1 to Grade 12, and prizes will be awarded to the four best performances.

To enter all you need to do is post your entry on Facebook, Instagram or TikTok. Use the #apartheidmuseum and tag us so that we can find your entry. Make sure to include your name, age and grade in the description of your post.

A prize will be awarded to the best performance from each of the following categories:

  • Grade 1 - Grade 4

  • Grade 5 - Grade 7

  • Grade 8 - Grade 10

  • Grade 11 - Grade 12

“Each prize is a hamper made up of goodies from our museum shop,” says education officer, Georgie Griffin. “The hamper includes hoodies, t-shirts, books and more. There are loads of goodies up for grabs so be brave and send us your entry!”

“You can enter on your own or with a group of friends. The judges are looking for unique, original performances that show an understanding of our late, great president and an awareness of some of the challenges our country is still facing today,” explains Griffin.

Both the Apartheid Museum and the Nelson Mandela Capture Site have had to close their doors because of COVID-19 which has meant that our educational programmes and school tours have been placed on hold. The two museums are keen to connect with learners in the digital space. “We hope that by engaging with you on platforms such as Instagram and TikTok, we can encourage the youth of South Africa to investigate their country’s history in a way that is fun and exciting,” Griffin explains.
